Randy Gates moved to Moody with his parents, Jane and Ken Gates, when he was in the second grade. Randy attended Moody Schools and was raised in the community. His parents owned the local flower shop, 'Flowers and Things,’ and The Moody Courier. Randy married his high school sweetheart, Utahna Seymour, in 1986. They have two children, Jacqueline Jones and Scott Gates. Utahna and Randy have one grandchild, Tazzleigh Jones. Jackie and Scott graduated from Moody ISD, and Jackie, Joseph and Tazzleigh live in Lorena. PFC Scott Gates serves in the United States Army and is currently stationed in Virginia.

Randy, Utahna, and his parents are all former members of the Moody Volunteer Ambulance Association. Randy and Utahna are members of The Well church in Moody.

Randy currently serves as vice-president of the Moody Community Library Board and is affiliated with Z. S. Teague Lodge 568 in Moody, along with his father and son.

Randy has been actively involved with the Scouting program in Moody for approximately 10 years and currently serves as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 425.

Randy has been licensed as a Texas Peace Officer for 22 years and has previously worked as a school resource officer for Connally ISD, a patrolman with Hewitt PD, and an investigator with the McLennan County Sheriff's Department.
